MB7IBG Gateway

The MB7IBG (Internet Birmingham Gateway) is operational on 145.2125 MHz. The PA fan control system has been fitted to the modified Simoco (Phillips) PRM80 and is giving excellent service. The audio from the gateway is exceptional having spent over a week of testing the system across various connections / levels. We are using a professional compressor limiter to control the peak audio from the internet system, it prevents the system from being over driven and enhances connections with low audio.

Expected Coverage

The equipment line up will be with the backup transceiver in the initial stages a tuned Simoco PRM8020 delivers excellent performance.

A new interface has been designed to run the PRM80 due to matching issues asociated with the original (legacy) interfaces that have been used. The interface provides full COR operation to remove the need for VOX operation that has proved to be problematic.

The interface plugs into the rear of the PRM80 (15 way) and provides excellent audio from the correct take off points for the PRM80. This is the prototype interface and we will be producing an enhanced version with a PTT driven fan timer to keep the PRM80 PA cool.

PRM-80 Notes

The PRM80 (Simoco & Phillips) are not rated at a 100% duty cycle they are rated for about 20% the transcaiver has two programmable power setings and in our case we have adjusted the high power setting to deliver 5 watts into load. This will ensure that the PA with cooling will run quite cool.
